Street Census, May 25 The 2022 Winnipeg Street Census takes place on Wednesday, May 25. This one-day survey creates a snapshot of homelessness in our city that can help us to better understand it. On Street Census day, hundreds of trained volunteers gather info through brief, in-person surveys along walking routes in central areas. No identifying info is collected, yet the results provide crucial info on demographics and experiences of homelessness that can help us to prevent and end homelessness in Winnipeg. Get involved! Volunteers are still being recruited until Thursday, May 12. For more info, visit: https://streetcensuswpg.ca or follow the hashtag #StreetCensus on social media. Bear Witness Day, May 10 May 10 is Bear Witness Day, a time to honour the memory of Jordan River Anderson and to advance Jordan’s Principle, a child-first principle that aims to eliminate service inequities and delays for First Nations children by ensuring that any public service ordinarily available to all other children must be made available to First Nations children without delay or denial. A recently released report on implementation of Jordan’s Principle in Manitoba found that access to quality housing is a significant gap for First Nations children in our province, recommending that funding and other resources be made available to uphold the human right to adequate housing for every First Nations child. Elder Belinda Vandenbroeck gifted this name: a Cree word meaning “a place to come to for help, shelter, or resources.” Naatamooskakowin was co-created by service providers and lived experts as a new way for people to connect quickly with the housing and supports they need. This resource is for people who experience homelessness and face barriers to finding a place. These barriers may include things like needing a home that is accessible for a disability, needing room for you and your kids, or not having family or friends in town who can help you out.
